What exactly is a houseboat? What exactly is a shikara?
Most travel articles blur these two together. They are completely different experiences built for different kinds of travelers.
A houseboat is a floating hotel. When you step onto a traditional Kerala houseboat, you are stepping into accommodation — a private bedroom with attached bathroom, air conditioning that keeps you comfortable through the Kerala heat, a private chef who prepares meals while you relax on the upper deck, and the unhurried experience of watching Vembanad Lake pass by from a comfortable distance.
A shikara is an exploration boat. It is smaller, more agile, and capable of accessing the places that make Alleppey special. The narrow village canals. The birdwatching islands that large boats cannot enter. The community life of Nehru Trophy Village, Kuppupuram, and Kainakari. The hidden waterways of Panackal Canal, Kannitta Canal, and Pallickaran Canal — places that remain completely invisible to houseboat passengers.
Shikara tours give access to around 10 island villages and narrow canals that large houseboats cannot comfortably enter. This is the most powerful differentiator between the two experiences.
Do houseboats cruise all day and night?
Many travelers assume a 22-hour houseboat stay means 22 hours of cruising. In reality, the schedule looks more like this:
The actual cruising time is much shorter than most first-time visitors expect. This is not a flaw — it is simply the nature of a floating hotel experience versus an exploration tour. In total, a standard 22-hour houseboat stay includes only around 4.5 hours of actual cruise time.

What most houseboat guests never see
About 20% of shikara guests have already experienced a houseboat before booking with us. When asked why they came back for a shikara tour, the answer is almost always the same: they felt they had missed something.
They are right. Because large houseboats are restricted to the main lakes and wider channels, houseboat passengers typically never see:
Hidden Canals
Panackal, Kannitta, and Pallickaran canals are accessible only by smaller boats. These are some of the most beautiful stretches of water in Alleppey.
Village Life
Farmers, toddy tappers, local fishermen, children going to school by boat — the daily rhythm of backwater life is only visible from the canal network.
Island Communities
Up to 10 island villages including Nehru Trophy Village, Kuppupuram, Kainakari, and Kuttamangalam can be visited on longer shikara routes.
Birdwatching Islands
Nehru Trophy Village — the home base of Alleppey Shikaras — is known for scenic views, birdwatching, and its famous snake boat race heritage.
The most authentic experience in the Alleppey backwaters is not the boat — it is the people. Village walks are where travelers truly understand what makes this place special.
The best village on the shikara route
Guests consistently give the strongest feedback about Nehru Trophy Village. It is the home village of Alleppey Shikaras, and it combines scenic backwater views, exceptional birdwatching, and the heritage of Kerala's famous Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race. It is the kind of place that photographs beautifully but feels even better in person.
On longer Kuttanad routes, the shikara covers approximately 10 kilometres through a landscape that shifts between open lakes, narrow canals, coconut groves, and island communities. The ideal duration for this experience is 5 hours — enough time to stop, walk, eat, and return with memories that last.
Insider KnowledgeThe single most beautiful spot in the Alleppey backwaters
If the boat could stop at only one place — the answer is Kainakari Floating Terminal. There is something about the way the water, the coconut palms, and the quiet activity of the lake converge at that point that captures everything that makes the Alleppey backwaters extraordinary. It is not well known to most tourists, which is part of what makes it special.
For photography specifically:
- Sunrise Vembanad Lake from a shikara — the most beautiful morning views in Alleppey
- Sunset Punnamada Lake and Kainakari Vattakayal — memorable in every season
Something most tourists completely miss
Most visitors to Alleppey experience the backwaters from a boat and leave. What they miss is kayaking through the narrow canals — offered by Alleppey Kayaking Club at Nehru Trophy Village. Paddling yourself through the village waterways at water level, with no engine noise and complete freedom to stop anywhere, is a different kind of experience entirely. It is the closest you can get to actually living in the backwaters for an hour.
Best months for each experience

Post-monsoon season. The backwaters are full, the air is fresh, and the skies are clear for open lake views.
October – February
The full post-monsoon and winter season. Calm waters, excellent visibility, and ideal conditions for photography and birdwatching.

What to bring — and what to leave behind
Bring: Lightweight cotton clothing, snacks for the boat, a waterproof phone case, and a change of clothes if you plan to do water activities. A hat for sun protection goes a long way.
Leave behind: Your frustration. Office problems, family stress, everything that weighs on you during ordinary life — leave it outside. The backwaters are not a place for checking messages. They are a place for looking at the water, capturing memories, sharing a meal, and eating until you are full. That is the right way to experience Alleppey.
"If someone asks me what the best backwater experience in Kerala is, my honest answer is a houseboat. There is nothing quite like waking up on the water with a private chef and the sound of the lake around you. But if they ask me what the most memorable experience is — the one that makes people come back — it is always the shikara, the canals, and the moment they step off the boat and walk into a village." — Rahul The Guide

Questions travelers ask most
Answered by Rahul The Guide from 30 years of backwater experience.
No. Houseboats are required to anchor by sunset under Kerala regulations. A 22-hour stay typically includes only 3–4 hours of actual cruising — afternoon and a short morning cruise. The rest of the time, the boat is anchored. This is not a flaw; it is simply the floating hotel experience. Do not choose a houseboat expecting to be moving through the backwaters continuously.
Our premium shikara comfortably seats up to 30 passengers, making it suitable for families, couples, small groups, and private tours.
Three hours is comfortable for a first experience. Four hours is preferred. Five hours is the best — it gives enough time to explore the hidden canals, stop at island villages, take photographs, and return feeling like you have truly seen the backwaters. For the full Kuttanad route, five hours covers approximately 10 kilometres of waterways.
Nehru Trophy Village consistently receives the strongest guest feedback. It offers scenic backwater views, excellent birdwatching, and a direct connection to the heritage of Kerala's famous Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race. It is also the home base of Alleppey Shikaras, so we know every corner of it.
October to December. The monsoon has passed, the backwaters are full, and the weather is pleasant. These months offer the most comfortable overnight conditions and the best open lake scenery.
October to February. The entire post-monsoon and winter season is excellent for shikara tours — calm waters, clear skies, ideal photography conditions, and active birdwatching on the island routes.
Lightweight cotton clothing, snacks, a waterproof phone case, and a change of clothes if you are planning to do kayaking or water activities. Most importantly — leave your stress behind. The backwaters deserve your full attention.
Kayaking through the village canals with Alleppey Kayaking Club. Most tourists miss it entirely. Paddling yourself through narrow waterways at water level, in complete silence, with no engine noise — it is a completely different experience from any boat tour, and one that the most adventurous travelers consistently call the highlight of their trip.
